Performance Information

A dual media, sound and movement experience, simultaneously occurring INSIDE the former Peet’s Coffee shop and viewed OUTSIDE from 14th street’s sidewalk. Visitors can watch the performance projected onto the windows and look through cut outs in the window to see the live movement.   

Uremovich (projection), Hsu (videography), Diouf (sound) and Ewing (performance) are longtime CulturalDC collaborators. INSIDE/OUT builds on a body of performance and technology work that seeks to dissolve the boundary between art and everyday life by using technology to create the spectacle of theater in pedestrian settings.

Dylan Uremovich (projection designer) is a lighting and multimedia designer based in Washington DC. He has had the pleasure of working as a designer with several arts organizations in the region including Mosaic Theater Company, Imagination Stage, Pointless Theater Company, Choral Arts Society of Washington, University of Maryland, Dance Place, S. J. Ewing & Dancers, and Xing Dance Theater. His twin artistic obsessions are telling amazing stories and creating interactive environments that respond to the movements and actions of both performers and audience. Based in Maryland Jonathan Hsu (videographer) graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a dual degree in Kinesiology and Dance. Currently dancing with Orange Grove Dance, he has also performed with Rennie Harris Puremovement (extra), PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER, Project CHarma, and Culture Shock DC in Russia, Germany, Cuba, Mexico, the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre, PS21, San Diego Civic Theatre, and many local venues in the Maryland and DC area. Along with dance performance and teaching Jonathan is also interested in the intersection of dance and media through photography, videography, and projection design. A native of the Washington D.C. area, Jade Diouf (sound designer) is a 2019 YoungArts Finalist. She is a Class of 2023 Juilliard student with training across multiple dance genres and methodologies and is a CityDance Conservatory alumna. Her summers have taken her throughout Europe and Canada to intensives including Nederlands Dans Theater in the Hague, Arts Umbrella in Vancouver, and Orsolina28 in Moncalvo. With experience performing on prestigious stages and in residences with world-renowned artists and companies, such as Dance Theatre of Harlem and Ron K. Brown’s Evidence, Jade has engaged and collaborated with a diverse array of creative processes. Sarah J. Ewing (performer) is an Australian born choreographer, a CityDance Ignite Artist, and the Director of S. J. Ewing & Dancers. She builds art at the intersection of dance and technology through long-term collaborations with Dylan Uremovich and Jonathan Hsu. Their work has been created and presented for theaters, site-specific and pedestrian locations, and virtual reality platforms. Ewing has received extensive support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and alongside Uremovich, was one of the first artists commissioned by the Kennedy Center for the new REACH campus. In 2020, she made her choreographic debut for a main-stage opera for Maryland Lyric Opera's Thais. Ewing has also been commissioned by the Kennedy Center, CityDance, CulturalDC, Georgetown University, and Dance Metro DC. She has presented throughout the District, including Dance Place, Source Theatre, and Dupont Underground, and toured her work to New York, Detroit, Houston, Boston, France and New Zealand.
