Project 4 presents a solo exhibition of work by Aurora Robson. The show will feature sculptures, paintings, and collages by the New York-based artist, who transforms the recycled plastics and other wasted materials with which she works into intricate objects of childlike whimsy and poignant beauty.

Her complex, floating sculptures draw from inspirations ranging from litter and junk mail to childhood nightmares. The size of these sculptures increases in tandem with the expansion of her career, while Robson's experimentation in installation work has grown as well.

Immersing the viewer within the dream-like world she generates, Robson's work results from a practice which she has described as 'recognizing and embracing new possibilities while encouraging others to do the same.' Through her use of translucent materials and candy coated colors, Robson elevates her medium of discarded materials to create works filled with lightness, positivity and sophistication. Her current large scale commission for Merrill Lynch has allowed Robson the freedom to push the limits of her work to create a piece larger and more complex than anything she has completed yet.

Aurora Robson (b. 1972 Toronto, Canada) earned her B.A. in Visual Art and Art History at Columbia University in New York, and is widely exhibited throughout the country. She recently completed an Artist-in-Residence program at the Islip Museum Carriage House in Islip, New York.

Source Festival brings us three weeks packed with unbridled fearlessness and sheer nerve. Reviving the Washington Theatre Festival’s rich and storied tradition that goes back almost 30 years, Source Festival reinvents DC’s original arts festival.

Source Festival is 100% new.
New plays. New collaborations. New audiences.

This year we’ve put together an amazing slate. We’ve selected 18 10-minute plays and commissioned five one acts. Preeminent local choreographers and playwrights have teamed up to produce seven 10-minute shows from start to finish in 24 hours. And we’ve paired 17 performing and visual artists on “creative blind dates” to spark six inventive mash-up projects.

The Festival brings artists together in unexpected ways to present never before-seen live performances. A seasoned actor pairs up with a first-time playwright; and a hip hop musician and installation artist collaborate to debut together on stage. The result is never the same.

We invite you to watch tradition and innovation collide. You’ll only find it at Source. Join us.

The works in this show explore the images and themes evoked by both the intimate and the broader society. Isolation, imprisonment, genocide, shoring up the family, saving our young, and community pride are some of the provocative themes explored. These artists share a desire to communicate their perception of the human condition. Some are bolder in approach than others.

What does it mean to be unapologetic? In short it’s a form of defiance and a willingness to risk rejection in the defense of your position. The title encompasses a group of artists unafraid to explore and experiment in content, strong design and techniques. The work is rich in “soul”. It has a “bite”. The audience is invited to visually and emotionally peel back the overtones of each work.

Dorri’s art is influenced by the bright colors, and the larger than life landscapes of the southwest and Mexico . Her optimistic outlook comes through in every painting and is meant to convey vivid images that inspire. Dorri paints using pure, bright colors, only occasionally mixing or graying colors. Her compositions are uncomplicated and consciously not detailed, whether abstract, landscapes or still life. “I enjoy creating paintings that aim to lift moods and wash away the complexities of life, says Dorri Thyden. In her most recent exhibition, “Inspire”, Dorri uses colorful, flowing images of flowers and cacti through a spectrum of colors to portray fluidity and ease.

Derede’s art depicts the richness and fullness of the African American experience. The recurring theme of her work - individuals and themes that have shaped or enriched the lives of others. “The takeaway for my art is – make a positive impact on everyone you touch,” says Derede McAlpin. Her favorite mediums are charcoal and graphite, oil pastels, and acrylic and oil paint. “LOVE” depicts a bride and groom. “FAMILY COURT” offers a glimpse into the court system featuring a judge offering fatherly advice to a young boy. “THE OR” is an abstract portraying a doctor and his team working on a patient. “THE STEREOTYPE” features a heavy-set woman. Derede’s illustrations have been published in a children’s book for the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Her work is influenced by he

In Nancy Pane Fortwengler’s series of figurative dress paintings, the body exists without the figure. The human body is not present in any of her work. The dresses, costumes, and tiers of fabric are in motion without a body to propel them. “Fabrications” reveals the construction, shape, and composition of these vibrant forms while embodying the presence of the human figure.

Exploring the form and iconic symbols of femininity are long, reoccurring subjects for Fortwengler. This particular series evolved from working backstage with a ballet company. “The dancers, costumes in movement under the dramatic stage lighting created a wonderful abstraction within the layers of fabric. As light traveled though layer upon layer, new shapes were created, and I saw something new. The bodies of the dancers became irrelevant, and the dresses took on a life of their own.”

These figures are soft yet powerful. The female forms take “center stage,” with only one “figure” featured in each piece. Fortwengler’s exaggerated color palette creates a heightened sense of reality, and places each piece in a dramatic, moody environment.

Fortwengler works almost exclusively in pastel. “Pastel is my preferred medium. It unites the act of drawing and painting, unlike any other medium. The very nature of holding the pastel, and manipulating it directly, allows me to greatly control the amount of pressure and pigment I apply to the surface. The luminosity, vibrancy, and consistency of pastel are extremely relevant to my subject matter, enabling me to fully capture and portray transparency and dimension.”

Fortwengler is a resident artist at Columbia Pike Artist Studios in Arlington, VA, a member of The Art League, and is a full member of the Degas Pastel Society, an associate member of the Southeastern Pastel Society, and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. Her work is held in collections nationally and internationally. She continues to study with Diane Tesler at The Art League School, a longtime mentor and teacher for over two decades.

'Fabrications' is sponsored by Frame Masters.

In the game of American football eleven players take the field. For those familiar with football colloquialisms, the phrase 'The Twelfth Man' refers to the collectivity of the crowd and the fans’ emotional investment in the action. In the context of this art exhibition, the title 'The Twelfth Man' carries connotations of spectatorship and serves as introduction into the artistic reconsideration of fandom, achievement, play, and new-age masculinity presented by Kenny George and Patrick McDonough.

Seen together in this installation, the selected works challenge the marginalization of the individual fan, and re-establish recreational outlet as a valuable and creative, albeit problematic, social act. Utilizing model cars, super-soakers, pogo-sticks, stilts and video games as instruments of artistic expression, George and McDonough address alternative mythologies of play and maleness through varying degrees of agency that offer compelling recapitulations of boyhood informed by the development of a virtual, cyber world, as well as humorous respite from the mundane obstacles of adult life.

9. Ami Martin Wilber: gestation presented by Gallery at Flashpoint Opening Reception: Thursday, June 11, 6-8pm

when:

June 11 – July 18, 2009

Tuesday - Saturday, 12pm-6pm

where:

Gallery at Flashpoint

916 G Street NW

Washington

t: 202.315.1310

cost

free

Ami Martin Wilber creates a visual and visceral landscape in her new site-specific installation, gestation, opening June 11, 2009 at the Gallery at Flashpoint. gestation incorporates 100 ovoid alabaster forms, roughly 5 x 3 inches each, created over the course of 273 days, the human gestation period. The artist will install the diminutive works directly on the floor of the gallery, asking the viewer to crouch, move and bend in order to see the work closely.

The luminous alabaster forms were each carved and sanded by hand. The arduous and time-intensive aspect of the work underscores Wilber’s interest in repetitive process. Wilber is as interested in process and endurance as she is in creating the resultant art-object. Like Wilber’s previous work, there is an underlying tension between intuitive order and organic imperfection, sentimentality and logic. While the work reflects an obsessive, even mechanical, sense of process and precision, slight irregularities in shape and size emerge from the imperfections in natural materials.

gestation marks Wilber’s second solo exhibition at the Gallery at Flashpoint. In 2004, Wilber’s Contained Existence, also featured 100 sculptures, but focused on man-made materials such as steel, poured rubber and glass beakers.

First Friday Reception, July 3, 5-8pm
Movie Night, July 17, 7-9pm
Shop Talks, July 18, 1-3pm

Print shops from around the world converge in DC this month to present new works that run the gamut of print processes. Visitors will get a chance to see just how diverse and thriving printmaking is today. For over a year Meet Your Printmaker has been compiling a directory of independent print/printmaking studios through its blog (blog.meetyourprintmaker.com). Unlike other printmaking blogs, Meet Your Printmaker shifts the emphasis away from the artist/printmaker and presents the printers/printmakers as a unique workforce … the groups and individuals who uphold and evolve new and traditional printing/printmaking techniques, whether in the form of commercial work, artist editions or retail products and who share their skills and educate their respective communities.

The work in this exhibition presents a selection of printed matter from 40 print/printmaking studios around the world. We asked that the studios abandon any ideas/judgments of client work vs. personal work; art vs. design; experimental vs. traditional, etc. so that we may present this as a general inquiry into how these studios (some of which have never presented work in a gallery setting) are approaching the use of similar tools and processes. The results are as diverse as 3D constructions from New York, street artist folios from Latin America, letterpressed posters from across the country, and some exceptional collaborative works made locally.

It's a great pleasure for us to invite you to the opening of Dwell 2, the second of Douz and Mille' two part 2009 summer program.
This time we will meet you at a great location in Washington, DC: gallery #303 on 923 F St., NW. Our temporary home is a well-known artist studio venue; it is located in the heart of Penn Quarter and just steps away from the Red Line's Gallery Place metro station.
To keep the proposal simple and straightforward we decided to skip the essays, wall labels, handouts, even the press release, and offer the simplest of all proposals: let's just trust the art work.
The exhibit includes two site specific installations by Puerto Rican artist, Ada Bobonis and New York multimedia artist, Bill Shannon.
We look forward to seeing you there!!!

Hello Summer! Hello Masterpiece! Curator's Office is entering a gravitas-free zone this summer and aims to inject some kitsch into your souls, some humor into your lives, and a knowing wink at your art appreciation. We welcome Leslie Holt's witty postcard-size paintings into the gallery in which Hello Kitty invades art historic masterpieces from Hopper to Picasso, from Cezanne to Goya. A reception for the DC-area born artist takes place on Saturday, June 27 from 6:30 - 8 pm.

Art historian and professor of art history Ivy Cooper writes about Holt's series Hello Masterpiece: 'Cue Hello Kitty, who wanders into each of these paintings to play dress up, mimic characters, and generally wreak havoc with whatever seriousness these mini-masterpieces manage to maintain....Hello Kitty gets to treat art history like her personal playground. And why not? As famous as these masterpieces are, they don't hold a candle to Hello Kitty, that marshmallow manga symbol of multinational corporate pop-cultural hegemony....With Hello Masterpiece, (Holt) has perfectly replicated the conflation of high and mass culture that marks 21st century Capitalism. At the same time, each individual work in the series makes its own commentary on perennial issues ranging from love and beauty to labor and fetishism.'

'There is something about Anil Rao’s mixed media work that immediately captures the viewer’s attention. One could imagine this is the result of the work’s natural exuberance, the sheer contagious joy and reverence that you feel when confronted by his optically sumptuous imagery of Tirupati and Tirumala—a holy Hindu complex in Southen India near Madras . This irrepressible high-spiritedness is fueled by the nature of artist’s object, and in no small measure by Rao’s flair for color and design.

Fundamentally, the deliberative artificializing motifs in Anil Rao’s images which strengthen the syncretistic aspect of his work remind us that all of our concepts regarding “art” spring out of the cultural context. That interpretation, that cultural conditioning, forces us to consider our collective desires as human beings to perpetually conjure up an ideal environment whether in spirituality, architecture, poetry or the visual arts. Anil Rao’s photography-based paintings make this ideal tangible by reaching to the higher ground.'

An obsession with female physical form is the hallmark of the male heterosexual. The artist tries to capture the paradoxical subtle beauty of the female and attempts to commune with something beyond the subject's mind-body-sense complex.

The personality that is both artificial and superficial (the model has no relationship in most cases with the artist) replaced by the ideal: Samadhi with what lies under the skin (no need to repeat clichéd aphorisms).

What in fact lies beneath the surface is common to all human beings and the subtle physical beauty of a female is just but one of an infinite number of reflections of that which is both universal and personal.

The Art of Latin America and the Caribbean in the 20th Century.

An exhibition organized by the Cultural Center of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Washington, D.C., with the collaboration of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of the American States (OAS), in Washington, D.C., and the Antioquia Museum in Medellín, Colombia. The exhibition honors Colombia and the City of Medellín, site of the 50th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank. All the art works included in the exhibition are part of the collections of the Inter-American Development Bank or the Organization of American States.

To a great extent, the exhibit represents the development of the arts in the region throughout the 20th century. The number of works has been deliberately fixed to associate the occasion with the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Inter-American Development Bank and the celebration of the 2009 Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors. It is also a good-will gesture on the part of the IDB to the City of Medellín, which is hosting both celebrations.

The selection of 20th century works comprises two-dimensional works: paintings, drawings and engravings, and allows for an overview, seldom seen in Medellín, of many of the most important moments in the artistic life of Latin American and Caribbean art during the last century. The exhibit will be presented in Washington, at the IDB Cultural Center Art Gallery, after it closes in Medellín’s Museo de Antioquia, Colombia.

Washington,

On exhibit in the lobby at 901 E Street NW.

Project 4 and PEW Trusts proudly present a solo exhibition of paintings by Nashville-based artist, Rusty Wolfe.

Inspired by the landscape as seen from the window of an airplane, Wolfe animates the geometries of cities, farmland and roads for these map-like panel paintings. Employing a multi-layered palette, Wolfe composes collages of opposing angles and repeating geometric shapes.

Color and texture play key roles in mediating the viewer's exploration of the painted surface; while the former balances emotional and compositional forces within the work, the latter highlights the images' suspension in time and space.

Since 2004 Don't Hit Mama works with the successful concept of the clubevent: a marriage between the contagious clubvibe of a good dancing club and theatre. The styles Don't Hit Mama bases itself on- social dancing from the African-American tradition - lend themselves well for this particular form of presentation. The clubevents are a meeting and exchange for the viewers as well the as dancers: dancers in theatrical surroundings, of which the viewers are part.

Because performer and viewers are in the same space, the border between stage and viewer blurs, as does the border between theatre- and social dancing. Don't Hit Mama develops this by placing several dancers opposite of each other (a breakdancer measures itself with a modern African dancer), and by letting contrasting individualities react to each other. Don't Hit Mama uses the different dance styles and dancers as the ingredients of an explosive, theatrical laboratory.

This is an interactive performance and there will be a limited amount of seating.

The Ambassador Theater is delighted to present its inaugural production, the D.C. premiere of Polish playwright Slawomir Mrozek's one-act play OUT AT SEA, directed by Hanna Bondarewska.

Three men find themselves on a makeshift raft in the middle of the ocean. With hunger setting in and no hope of rescue, they discuss the limited available resources of sustenance. The hilarious conversation that ensues explores the folly of human nature in all its comedy and pathos, as well as the way that class, politics, and Darwinian natural selection intrude upon even the smallest of communities.

This short Polish masterpiece is a must-see for lovers of the absurd or anyone who enjoys an unconventional laugh. OUT AT SEA is produced with the collaboration of the Embassy of Poland and is the first of the Ambassador Theater's repertory of plays from around the world which bring the color of DC's international community to life on stage.

The play features an AEA Special Appearance by David Bryan Jackson, and also features Stephen Shelter, Rob Weinzimer, and T. Anthony Quinn. The show is stage managed by Greg Patton.

Artomatic is a month-long art festival in DC that is free to the general public celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Monument Realty and the Capitol Riverfront BID have provided a brand-new 275,000 square foot building to host Artomatic, right next to the Nationals Stadium. The event features nine floors of visual and installation art, theater performances, dance and comedy, three music stages, street performances such as fire dancing and drum troupes, and a film screening theater. Workshops and seminars are held all month long and special events such as the Washington Post's Peeps diorama finalists, the Zombie Prom, Box Racing, body paint shows, and a no-holds-barred Art in Fashion Show.

With four stages, four bars and a lounge on each floor, the 10th Anniversary Artomatic is bigger than ever. 52,500 people attended Artomatic last year, and 70,000 are expected this year. Over 1,000 visual artists and 600 performing artists are exhibiting this year.
